Does it thunderstorm in koke’e state park in Hawaii?

spaethe_bt asked:

I am considering going out there next week and I really want to get a lightning bolt on camera with the Kauai landscape. Ive heard it rains out there at night, but does the weather normally produce lightning there?

Normally, no. But we have had unusual weather lately and there has been some lightning. Good luck!

It does rain frequently on Kauai, but usually a gentle rain. It’s not impossible for you to see lightning, but I’ve been living in Hawaii for 8 and a half years, and sometimes years go by without me seeing any lightning. I was astounded to see about 7 strikes around Haleakala on Maui the other night, but they were so far off, I couldn’t even hear the thunder.

If you are going to see lightning, this is the time of year. Some of the heavy kona storms in the wintertime produce lightning, but sometimes they create flash floods, even if there’s no lightning.

Curiously, in North America, you are more likely to be struck by lightning than you are to be bitten by a shark, but in Hawaii, your personal chances of shark attack are 8 times your chances of lightning strike!
