i know, i live on oahu and waikiki is SUPER rocky!!! definitely get reef shoes for both you and the kid, because if you step on rocks/coral...ouch!

go to the ihilani hotel. there are five ko'olina lagoons, and the bottoms are nice and sandy--very few rocks. don't go during jellyfish season, though.

ala moana beach is great too, though there are a lot of tourists and people
but at least there are no rocks

Kailua Beach (windward side), Hanauma Bay (east Oahu), Ko Olina (leeward side), Waimea Bay (north shore), Magic Island & Ala Moana Beach Park (both in town).

Big Tip...BUY SOME WATER SHOES...a must have to protect your feet in the waters of Waikiki...(I know I jumped off of my surfboard and landed on a Sea Urchin and ended up in Urgent Care, OWWWWWW) so invest in some reef shoes, you'll be glad you did!!! I also bought them for my 3 teens who surfed everyday and they loved them...you can get them at some ABC stores or usually in your Hotel Lobby Shoppes (we got ours at our Hotel..Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach) get them for your whole family and your whole out-look on Waikiki Beach will change...LOL...below I have given a couple sites Ko'olina Beach and Ala Moana Beach Park..as well as Lanikai you may be interested in...all are good places for people with young kids...~~Aloha~~

If you take SR-61 out of Honolulu and go to the south-east shores of Oahu, Kailua Beach Park has what I firmly believe to be the best sandy, swimmable beaches in Oahu. Just south of there is Lanikai which continues this trend. It's probably the closest you are going to get to a Kauai-like experience, in terms of beach quality.

I agree Waikiki beach is beautiful to walk ON but extremely painful to walk IN the water, without water shoes. Even then it's annoying.
